Using Microsoft Expresison Web (without Dreamweaver)

Hi,
in fact f-source menu is just HTML code + SWF file.

You need dreamweaver to generate the files, but you can edit the menu
in any text/html editor.

If you don't have dreamweaver I can generate and send you the files.

How to use Google Custom Search

How can I replace the standard search box in the Macromedia-style
menu with a Google CSE Search Box? Thanks for your help!

Answer:

Hi,
for example you have the google custom search code:

<!-- Google CSE Search Box Begins -->
<form id="searchbox_015076957661366469059:4-chnwqi44u"
action="http://www.google.com/cse">
<input type="hidden" name="cx" value="015076957661366469059:4-chnwqi44u" />
<input type="hidden" name="cof" value="FORID:0" />
<input name="q" type="text" size="40" />
<input type="submit" name="sa" value="Search" />
<img src="http://www.google.com/coop/images/google_custom_search_smnarb.gif"
alt="Google Custom Search" />
</form>
<!-- Google CSE Search Box Ends -->

The menu search button must have the code:
a href="http://www.google.com/cse?cx=015076957661366469059%3A4-chnwqi44u
%26cof=FORID%3A0%26sa=Search%26q="

"JScript" and "Javascript"

Hi,
I've checked your page.

You have a wrong type of script language:
<script language="JScript" type="text/jscript"
src="js/ActiveContentVertical.js"></script>

"JScript" and "Javascript" are different languages.

Try to set "Javascript".

Drop downs are going behind the absolutely positioned graphics

Hi Sheron,
I've tested your pages in Firefox and IE6,
everything looks ok.

If you still have a problem with z-index, I recommend to put the DIV
id="f-source-menu" in another DIV with absolute position:

<div align="center" style="position:absolute; z-index:99; top:10px;
width:100%; left:0px;">
<div id="f-source-menu" style="position:relative;">

Vista Dropdown Menu in a table cell

Hi Steven,
of course.
In fact, it must work by default.

If it's not working, possibly you forgot to disable the active content
converter:
http://f-source.com/before_insert/

Also you need to set (for local testing)"Always allow" in the online
setting manager:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.html

I recommend to start with a blank page using these simple steps:
http://f-source.com/flash-menus/good-practice/

I will help.

All multi domain menus or Unlimited Membership

Hi Dave,
of course you can use the menus for other people on unlimited number
of sites without the f-source button.

If you buy "Unlimited Membership" you will get notification and all
new menus for free.

For example our new 18th menu "Yahoo Style Menu Bar" will be published soon.

IE not displaying drop-downs (Live Style menu)

Hi,
I've checked your page.

You are using wrong script "ActiveContentDropDown2.js" (it's a script
for the Adobe Style menu)
The Live Style Menu require "ActiveContentDropDownWide.js".

The script provided in the menu package.
Upload the script on your server and change the path:

<script src='http://f-source.com/scripts/ActiveContentDropDown2.js'
type='text/javascript'></script>

By the way, there is no need to make EMBED tag.
Our script will generate the EMBED tab automatically.

browsers we've tested, except IE. I've tried many 'fixes' and can't
get the drop-downs to display. They work great in Firefox, Opera, and
Safari (both Mac and PC). I also had difficultly with IE displaying
the main buttons correctly until I put the button code into an XML
file. When the code was still in the templates, IE displayed default
text and button configuration, while the other buttons continued to
work correctly. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Floating or sliding vertical menus

Ahh,
yes, we have a script to make it float:
(add the script AFTER the vertical menu)

function move_menu()
{

}
else
{
floating_menu.style.left = fm_next_x + 'px';
floating_menu.style.top = fm_next_y + 'px';

}
function float_menu()

Get the menu to drop down beyond the boundaries of the flash object

Jeff,
in fact it is impossible to make the flash menu go beyond of the flash object.

Menu styles for the dreamweaver plugin

Hi,
each menu style is a separate Dreamweaver extension.

We don't offer universal menu builder, but opitimized, top-level,
ready-to-use menus. Each extension is optimized for one design and one
type of functionality.

All you need is to choose a proper menu:
http://f-source.com/dreamweaver-extensions/

However each menu has many parameters for customization, I recommend
to try a free version of some menu, for example, Adobe Style Menu:

Fit menu width of div

Hi Barry,
the vista menu can have only fixed width,
but you can extend the flash menu with the image to get similar effect,

width rule (using css not tables etc.) I insert a ruby red menu and it
beautifully fits to the width of the div and when the window of the

width shows '100%'. I want to have the same result when using the
vista menu but it stays a fixed width. I've entered 100% in both the
html code and in the 'stretch_with_to' box thinking it might be that
but it isn't. Can you help please?

Menu styles and types

Arthur,
1. Possibly the submenu goes over some page element which effect to
the menu. (Send me a link, I will help)

2. The style won't effect to the menu. That's how the flash works. The
<strong> tag won't effect. Only encoded <b> tag will work.

3. You can modify some horizontal menu, to make it looking flat, for
example you can make the Adobe Style menu transparent and place any
image as a background. (by using CSS style for the DIV
id="f-source-menu")

Menu Compatability Question Dreamweaver MX (version 6)

Thank you. I'll see if I can work this in. I was trying to use one of
the download programs and it said I had to have version 7 Dreamweaver.
I wanted to make sure I didn't order software in vain!

Hi,
the extension require Dreamweaver MX 2004 or higher.

But the menu itself is just HTML code + SWF file. (attached)

So you can edit the menu code in any editor.

When you will copy the menu code to another pages, don't forget to
copy these three code snippets:

1. Script - <script src='ActiveContent3_2.js'></script> (by default it
is located in the head of the page).
2. Navigation settings - DIV id='menu'.
3. Flash object - DIV id = 'f-source-menu'.

How to make 100% width version with the Business Style Menu ?

Hi,
the menu can be easily transformed to the 100% width menu.
Here is an example:
http://f-source.com/flash-menu/business-style/100p-width-example/

View the page source. The Business style menu DIV nested in another DIV:
<div align="center" style="width:100%; height:48px;
background:url(bg.png) repeat-x;">

Here is the background image:

The menu parameter "_removeDividers" is set to (Yes).

Link syntax

Hi James,
thanks for detailed review of the problem.
I don't know how to explain, why it's stop a menu from working.

These links must contain only href, target and button name.
Other elements will not affect or will stop a flash menu from working.

Hi Support,
Just thought you might be interested in a problem I encountered, but have now been able to fix.
I wondered if you might want to add something about it to your FAQ's, in case anybody else has the same problem?
I use Dreamweaver to create web pages, and I also use the popular Studio VII extension by Al Sparber called "IE Link Scrubber". Perhaps you have heard of this?
The extension will remove the dotted "focus" lines around text and image links in Internet Explorer that are normally used to indicate the link has focus.
The extension does this by adding the following code to ALL the <A HREF=""> tags in a page, for example;
onfocus="if(this.blur)this.blur()"
The effect this has on the F-Source menu is as follows.....
Before.....
<!-- f-source menu navigation settings (search engines friendly) -->
<!-- Change these links and press F12 to test -->
<div id='menu' style='position:absolute; visibility:visible;'>
<div><a href='http://f-source.com'>Flash menu</a></div>
<div id='submenu'>
<div><a href='http://f-source.com' target='_blank'>SubButton1-1</a></div>
etc...
After running the "IE Link Scrubber" .....
<!-- f-source menu navigation settings (search engines friendly) -->
<!-- Change these links and press F12 to test -->
<div id='menu' style='position:absolute; visibility:visible;'>
<div><a href='http://f-source.com' onfocus="if(this.blur)this.blur()">Flash menu</a></div>
<div id='submenu'>
<div><a href='http://f-source.com' target='_blank' onfocus="if(this.blur)this.blur()">SubButton1-1</a></div>
<div><a href='http://f-source.com' onfocus="if(this.blur)this.blur()">SubButton1-2</a></div>
etc.
Strangely the F-Source menu continues to work fine in the Firefox browser (my preferred test/dev browser), but when I ran Internet Explorer (version 7) the F-Source menu does not work at all!
It took me quite a while before I realised that it was this pesky Link Scrubber code that was preventing IE from running the menu. (I was being fooled into thinking it was a problem with Flash security, and was even more confused when I added a different Flash movie into the page and that worked fine).
Eventually I identified the problem and removed the onfocus= tags, and it worked perfectly again!!
I didn't intentionally mean to add the Link Scrubber tags to the F-Source menu code (I don't need them there). It happened simply because the IE Link Scrubber extension affects all links in the page regardless, and I didn't spot that F-Source menu had stopped working in IE until some time later, by which time the actual cause of the problem was not apparent.
So there it is.
It would be interesting if you can explain why it would stop the F-Source Flash menu from working?
I do not need, nor do I expect the Link Scrubber to work with F-Source menu!
So I'm not expecting a fix or support.
But you might like to add this to your FAQ's or support blog for anyone else who gets this.

James

Menu error after a file download in IE7

Hi,
it is IE security issue, for some reason IE blocks the menu script
(javascript from flash).

We've found a workaround.
Use links like this one:

<a href="javascript:window.open('someFile.zip');void(0);">download link</a>

The link will open new temporary window, but the window will be
eliminated and replaced with a standard download dialog.

Dmitry
f-source.com

>
> When using IE7 (not sure about older version) if you click on a
link to download a file and then try moving over the flash menu, we
get a 'Internet Explorer Cannot Download. Unspecified Error'. This
does not happen in Firefox. Also, the menu gets cut off when you try
to view it after you download the file.

Flash Menu height restriction?

Hi Arthur,
you can increase the max height of the flash area.

- open your copy of the script "ActiveContentVertical.js" (by default
the script is loaded in the head of your page from
http://f-source.com/scripts/ActiveContentVertical.js)(the script file
included in the menu package)
- find the string "areah=450"
- set desired value, for example "areah=600"

> Hi,
> I'd like to purchase your FV menu, but while testing your free
download version I discovered that after adding more than 18 buttons
to the menu it doesn't display any more after this number. In fact it
doesn't even display the submenu of the last (bottom) button in full
as it gets cut off again. There seems to be some menu height
restrictions that stop it from displaying any more buttons. I've tried
changing all the Height properties (on layer, menu object, anywhere I
could really) and nothing helps. I'm wondering... is it some kind of
limitation on the evaluation version or are there any restrictions
that won't allow me to have a taller menu?

Flat Vertical Menu .swf file won't update

Hi Walter,
I've checked your page.

The menu flash object code was converted.

1. Disable the Active Content Converter: http://f-source.com/before_insert/

2. Remove the menu code from your page.
3. Insert the menu again.

Yes, it is compatible with Mac Leopard and Dreamweaver CS3.

Possibly you forgot to remove a converted menu code.

I recommend to start with a blank page using these simple steps:

Can I use my navigation image as a background for a menu

Yes,
you can make a main menu bar transparent and place it over your own
background image.
For example the Adobe Style Menu have three settings:
_TransparencyMain, _TransparencyShadow, _TransparencySub.
http://f-source.com/buy/adobeMenu/

If you will need transparency in another menu, which doesn't have it.
I will add the feature for you for free.

Can't configure Vista Drop Down Menu

Hi Lindsey,
I've checked your page:
1. You need to insert in the head of your page the script:
<script src='http://f-source.com/scripts/ActiveContentDropDown.js'
type='text/javascript'></script>

2. The DIV id="menu" is ok.

3. The DIV id="f-source-menu":
the flash object has a path:
<param name="movie" value="file:///Macintosh
HD/Users/lindseysmcintyre/Desktop/menu/menu.swf" />
As you may understand it will never work on your server.

You need to set a relative path: <param name="movie" value="menu.swf" />
or absolute path: <param name="movie"
value="http://lindseymcintyrephotography.com/menu.swf" />

4. You must upload the SWF file on your server. It must be accessible
here: http://lindseymcintyrephotography.com/menu.swf

Using 2 different menus on one page

Please disregard this.

Your help has been great, thanks.
Just a couple more quick ones and I think I have it:

1. The vertical menu bar always says to 'click to activate to use this
control' -- how can I stop that? The horizontal one does not do that.
2. Can you tell me why I have so much space between the horizontal menu bar
and the vertical one (and the table that contains the title "Welcome to

3. In the vertical menu bar, is there a way I can use a background image

Hi,
note: our menu doesn't require any additional solutions.

Use the flashFix for another flash movies. ( http://f-source.com/flash/fix/ )

You need to remove all line breaks in the flash object code, for example
correct code:

Flash Menu SEO question

Hi Clare,
good question.

Google documentation ==> Hidden text and links
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66353

Some key sentences:

"If your site is perceived to contain hidden text and links that are
deceptive in intent, your site may be removed from the Google index"

"If you do find hidden text or links on your site, either remove them
or, if they are relevant for your site's visitors, make them easily
viewable."

In fact our hidden links are "easily viewable" and clickable in a flash menu.

We have another example of use of hidden text on our FAQ page: http://f-source.com/faq/

It is legitimate usage, not "deceptive in intent" they are "easily viewable". All hidden text is indexed, for example, here is the answer to the first question from the FAQ page:

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22It%27s+a+limitation+of+a+free+version%2C+get+a+full+version+-+buy+the+menu.%22
